The auto-install option appears in the settings → general → software update section after your iphone, ipod touch or ipad has downloaded a new firmware update. in prior ios versions, the new firmware would download automatically and there would be two options given: install and later .. To get a new ios version on your device, you'd go into the settings, then download the update. it would then either install right away or give you the option to install at nighttime. this whole process is easier in ios 12.. As far as i know, ios update never automatically takes place without user consent. ios download gets pushed automatically when your device is charging, connected to the internet over wifi and there's sufficient free space. it'll inform you when download completes and ready to install.. Apple really needs to offer an option to disable ios software updates from downloading automatically in addition to an option to not receive ios software update notifications. i swear i don't remember ios 5/6 updates downloading to my devices automatically like this.. Tap settings > general > software update. tap download and install. if a message asks to temporarily remove apps because ios needs more space for the update, tap continue or cancel. later, ios will reinstall apps that it removed. if you tap cancel, learn what to do next. to update now, tap install..
